  • Call for India to cut import tariffs by 50 pc

The Indian economy has not witnessed fast enough growth and, to be competitive, it needs to cut import tariffs by at least 50 per cent, said former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, while speaking at a webinar on Improving Indias competitiveness for inclusive economic growth last week. The underlying challenge is the ineffectiveness to translate broad uncontroversial objectives of competitiveness and growth into concrete and actionable policy programmes yielding results in a time-bound manner, he added, as per a report.
